MPower Change Action

Donald Trump’s first 70 days in office have been an all-out assault on the Muslim community—in the U.S. and abroad.

From the start, Trump stacked his administration with Islamophobes and welcomed anti-Muslim racists from the most radical fringes into the White House. In the last three weeks, the military has targeted schools, mosques, and neighborhoods in Syria and Iraq, killing hundreds of Muslim men, women, and children.1 And here at home, he’s already tried to enact two separate Muslim bans to make us afraid in our own country or else keep us out all together.

But here’s what Trump doesn’t understand—Muslims have been here since before Columbus, and we ain’t going nowhere now. In fact, we’re doubling down.

Want an example?

Let me introduce you to Abdul El-Sayed. He’s the son of Egyptian immigrants, a Rhodes Scholar who holds multiple doctorates, the former Director of Detroit’s health department, and at just 32 years old, Abdul’s running to become the youngest governor in the history of the state of Michigan—and the first Muslim governor in the country.

Check out Abdul’s campaign launch video and share it with your friends today.

Abdul El-Sayed for Michigan

Abdul’s not the only Muslim in U.S. politics, of course.

In Minnesota, former refugee Ilhan Omar became the country’s first elected Somali-American lawmaker this past fall. And last month, Keith Ellison—the country’s first Muslim-American Congressman—was selected as the Deputy Chair of the Democratic National Committee. All across the country, countless others are engaging in politics on the local level—from school boards to city councils to political clubs and civic organizations.

And here’s the thing: despite being practicing Muslims, guided by a faith imperative to be a mercy to those around them, neither Ilhan nor Keith were elected just because they’re Muslim. They won their elections because their communities believed that they were the best person for the job.

It’s easy to be discouraged by the Trump administration’s non-stop attacks on our people. But here are just two of the things that give us hope: the clear understanding that despite Trump’s god-complex, we know that the real God is in control; and people like Abdul, who are blazing trails for future generations.

Please watch and share Abdul’s launch video today.

In solidarity,

Tell Gov. Sandoval: Make It Easier To Register To Vote In Nevada – Support Automatic Voter Registration In NV

Excerpt from: CREDO Action

Republicans want to suppress the vote. For years, they have enacted discriminatory photo ID laws, cut back early voting, eliminated polling locations and done everything they can think of to make it harder for people to vote. Under Trump, extreme right-wing Republicans are already doubling down in these efforts, and Trump’s Department of Justice (DOJ) is not likely to stop them.

Nevada has a chance to reverse the tide and make it easier to vote – not harder.

Initiative Petition 1 would allow the secretary of state to automatically register eligible voters who obtain, renew or change the address for their driver’s license at the Department of Motor Vehicles.1 It has passed the Nevada House and is likely to pass the Senate. We need to send a strong message now to Gov. Brian Sandoval to make sure he signs this bill.

When voter registration and participation rates are low, the electorate is skewed toward conservatives. Making it easier for Nevadans to register to vote will help level the playing field in elections and could lead to a more progressive and representative legislature, as well as more desirable outcomes on Nevada ballot measures.

In 2015, thanks in part to the activism of tens of thousands of CREDO activists, California passed legislation to increase voter registration and participation. Vermont, Connecticut, Oregon, West Virginia, Alaska and the District of Columbia also recently enacted similar forms of automatic voter registration.2 Now we have a chance to pass similar legislation in Nevada, and there could not be a more important time.

While courts in North Carolina, Wisconsin and Kansas have blocked Republican efforts to make it harder to vote, Trump now has an opportunity to not only remake the Supreme Court but to fill hundreds of lower-court vacancies with extremist judges.3 Attorney General Jeff Sessions, whose willingness to subvert voting rights goes back decades, just removed the DOJ from a 6-year-long fight against Texas’ discriminatory voter ID law.4,5

In addition to doing everything we can to block Trump’s extreme agenda and stop bad laws, we must enact good ones that increase participation rates so voters can be more involved participants in the democratic process. Right now Nevada has the opportunity to go on offense and strengthen our democracy by making it easier for people to register to vote.

Gov. Sandoval failed to support a bill that would have greatly expanded the voter registration window in 2013. He has so far been silent on Initiative Petition 1, which advocates are taking as a sign that he may be considering signing it.6 We need to make sure he knows where we stand.

Can you add your voice to make sure Gov. Sandoval knows Nevadans are counting on him to strengthen our democracy by making it easier for people to register to vote?

  • The petition to Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval reads:
“Making it easier to register to vote will help increase Nevadans’ civic engagement and participation in elections. Sign Initiative Petition 1 to allow automatic voter registration in Nevada.”

Why Is Chuck Schumer Letting Joe Manchin Lead Senate Democrats? Remove Manchin From Leadership

Excerpt from: CREDO Action

manchin-unacceptable-180.jpg

In the face of Donald Trump’s fascism, Senate Democrats’ job should be clear: Stand up for core progressive values, defend the people most threatened by Trump and block and resist Trump’s hateful agenda.

That’s why it is unacceptable for a conservative extremist like West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin to hold a leadership position in the Senate Democratic Caucus. Manchin was the only “Democrat” who voted to confirm extreme racist Jeff Sessions as attorney general and foreclosure king Steve Mnuchin as treasury secretary. Recently, in a face to face meeting with the White House, Manchin reportedly remained silent while Trump launched a racist tirade against Sen. Elizabeth Warren. In 2015, Manchin voted to defund Planned Parenthood. This is not how a leader of Democrats should act.

There is no justification for Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer to anoint someone as a member of Democratic leadership who consistently votes with Trump’s extreme right-wing priorities, fails to defend our progressive values and routinely collaborates with Trump by enabling his racist and fascist agenda grounded in xenophobia and hate.1

Manchin should not be helping to lead the Democratic caucus. Can you add your voice to pressure Leader Schumer to act?

Schumer’s elevation of Manchin to a leadership role in his caucus legitimizes Manchin’s extreme right-wing positions and weakens Democrats’ ability to present a united front in opposition to Trump. To be clear, we respect West Virginia voters who have chosen Manchin to be their senator, and we absolutely believe that Sen. Manchin is free to make his own decisions about how to vote. But we reject the idea that Democratic Leader Schumer should have someone in a leadership position who:

  • voted to confirm friend-of-Putin Rex Tillerson as secretary of state;
  • voted to confirm climate-denying Scott Pruitt as head of the Environmental Protection Agency;
  • attacked former Democratic Leader Harry Reid by calling him “an absolute embarrassment to the Senate as an institution, our Democratic party, and the nation” for criticizing Trump’s election;2
  • went on Fox News to call President Obama’s climate policies a war on America;3
called Democratic support for repeal of the anti-abortion Hyde Amendment “crazy;”4 and
  • fought to gut mortgage protections proposed by the Obama administration that would prevent consumers being exploited by unethical Wall Street banks.5

Senate Democrats are one of the main firewalls against our fascist president and an extremist Republican party committed to his racist, xenophobic and misogynistic agenda. Leader Schumer has an opportunity to lead his caucus in unprecedented resistance, but he will fail if he chooses the path of compromise. If he keeps Sen. Manchin on his leadership team, he will be sending a clear message that he is more interested in conciliation than opposition. That’s why we’re joining with our friends at #AllOfUs, Democracy for America, 350 Action, and Other98 to pressure him to do the right thing.

  • Tell Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer:
“Sen. Joe Manchin consistently votes against the core principles and values of the Democratic Party’s progressive base. In the Trump era, his positions legitimize and normalize Trump. It is time for you to remove him from your leadership team.”

Thanks for everything you’re doing to fight back against Trump.

Tell Congressional Democrats: Block Low-Wage “Right-To-Work” Laws

Excerpt from: CREDO Action

When Republicans help Wall Street attack unions, we all end up poorer. But now that radical conservatives and financiers have a friendly puppet in the White House, they are planning a national assault on unions.1

The right-wing American Legislative Exchange Council and big corporations have been pushing low-wage work laws across the country for years. These so-called “right to work” laws let people who have good-paying jobs because of unions weasel out of paying union dues, pitting workers against each other and giving Wall Street far more power. Now, House Republicans led by right-wing extremist Steve King have introduced a new, national low-wage “right-to-work” bill, and they have an ally in Donald Trump.2

Too many Democrats have abandoned unions for far too long. We need to force them to find their spines and fiercely oppose this disastrous legislation.

Since seizing power in 2010, Republicans in state legislatures have stood side-by-side with Wall Street to mount attack after attack on unions. Now, 2017 is poised to be a disastrous year for working people. Two states have already adopted low-wage work laws, and more could follow. Worst of all, Republicans in the House have proposed a national law – and for the first time they have an ally in the White House. Trump said during the campaign he supports such laws, and his press secretary recently confirmed it.3,4

Trump’s plan appears to be to drag American workers down to the level of their global counterparts and race China to the bottom – no surprise from a man who makes many of his products overseas.5

Low-wage work laws hurt everyone. In states with these laws, working people make $6,000 less per year, regardless of whether they are in a union or not. Income inequality is higher. And fewer people have access to the benefits that unions fight for, like health care and pensions. Unions check unlimited corporate power and bring balance to the economy, making everyone better off.6

The same people pushing these low-wage work laws routinely fight against worker safety, the right to organize and higher wages. They are a sneak attack to give international corporations more power by undermining the unions that dare to stand up to them.7 Now Trump is poised to help his wealthy pals by attacking working people, including some of the people who voted for him.

For the sake of their party and the country, Democrats need to unequivocally side with working people against low-wage work laws. We need to make sure they get the message.

  • Petition to Congressional Democrats:
“Block and resist low-wage ‘right-to-work’ laws that drag down the wages and benefits of all working people, unionized or not.”

Tom Perez Will Be A Strong Fighter For Civil Rights

Excerpt from: The Nation

The new DNC chair opposed voter-ID laws, investigated police misconduct, and protected workers’ rights.

By Ari Berman, YESTERDAY 11:41 AM

Tom Perez could’ve been attorney general if Hillary Clinton had been elected president. Instead he’ll be chair of the DNC.

Conventional wisdom portrayed the race for DNC chair as a rerun of the 2016 presidential campaign, with Perez as the corporate establishment and Keith Ellison as the insurgent progressive. That narrative was greatly overstated. While I preferred Ellison as DNC chair, Perez has a strong and impressive progressive record, especially on civil rights.

As head of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division under President Obama from 2009 to 2013, Perez challenged strict voter-ID laws in Texas and South Carolina, sued Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio for racial profiling and objected to Arizona’s anti-immigration SB 1070, investigated police misconduct in a record number of cities, and rebuilt the Civil Rights Division after rampant politicization during the George W. Bush Administration.

Following that, as Obama’s labor secretary, Perez expanded overtime for 4 million workers and championed the Fight For $15 movement. Mary Kay Henry, president of SEIU, called Perez “one of the finest labor secretaries since Frances Perkins,” referring to FDR’s labor secretary. Perez is also the child of refugees who fled political persecution in the Dominican Republic.

This experience is particularly relevant now, as the Trump administration plans to wage war on voting rights, Jeff Sessions is already reversing Obama-era directives on LGBTQ rights and private prisons, and congressional Republicans are pushing a national right-to-work law. Trump is the greatest threat to democracy in our lifetime, and few are better equipped to fight back than Perez. (He also shrewdly made Ellison his chief deputy.)

Among other things, he’s called for a “voter empowerment office” at the DNC to make protecting voting rights a top priority for the party. “I’m proposing that the DNC dramatically expand its voter protection efforts and scale a voter empowerment office that is fully funded and fully staffed with legal experts operating year round and integrated with the party’s regional, organizing, and digital staff,” Perez said in January. “This investment is critical to ensure that everyone who is eligible to vote can do so without obstacles.”

Perez’s first task will be to revitalize the party internallyboosting forgotten state parties with a new 50-state strategy, repairing the breach that exists between the DNC and grassroots activists who are bitter about the Debbie Wasserman Schultz era, and channeling the resistance against Trump into electoral results. Perez doesn’t have the political experience of someone like Ellison, so time will tell if he’s up to the job. But at a moment when Democrats are searching for leaders, Perez can powerfully take on the Trump administration on issues like voting rights, policing, immigration, and the economy. For progressives upset about Ellison’s loss, Perez is a pretty darn good second choice.
