Donald Trump is running the most conflict-filled, scandal-tarred administration we’ve ever seen. So what are the chairs of the key congressional oversight committees doing about it?
Last week, Courage Campaign members made major TV and newspaper headlines by protesting in front of the local office of House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes — and we’re going to keep the pressure on until congressional Republicans do their job.(1)
Donald Trump’s national security advisor resigned under a cloud of controversy after just 23 days in that role. Trump has refused to even pretend to avoid conflicts of interest by divesting his business holdings and releasing his tax returns. Kellyanne Conway trampled on basic ethics rules by promoting Ivanka Trump’s clothing line.
And Trump has only been in office for a month. Just imagine what would happen if it were Hillary Clinton doing these things!
But the grassroots resistance is already putting enormous pressure on congressional Republicans.
House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz was shouted down by constituents at a town hall meeting, with hundreds of people chanting “Do your job.”(2) Conservative Senate Republicans from deep red states are openly starting to talk about the need for investigation of the Trump administration’s actions.(3)
None of the key Congressional Republicans are standing up to Trump they way they should, but California’s Devin Nunes might be the worst of the worst.
Last Monday, Trump’s national security adviser, Michael Flynn, resigned under reports that he colluded with the Russian government to undermine U.S. foreign policy, lied to the vice president, and may have even lied to the FBI.
Just hours before Flynn resigned, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes dismissed the whole thing, saying, “It just seems like there’s a lot of nothing there.” He even attacked the FBI for investigating Flynn’s actions in the first place!(4)
Rep. Nunes is either shockingly clueless or actively participating in a coverup. Either way, he should resign as chairman immediately.
Yours in resistance,
