Robert Reich, Former Clinton Cabinet Member & Sanders Supporter, Speaks Out

Robert Reich <>
Dear MoveOn member,

I flipped on CNN the other day, and I almost spit out my coffee.

There, on TV, was a Democratic U.S. senator arguing that we shouldn’t really try to block Trump’s stolen Supreme Court pick.1

Then I flipped the channel, and there was another one saying the same thing.2

Never mind that this is a stolen seat that by all rights belongs to President Obama’s nominee, Merrick Garland. Or that this is a judge who by many counts is “more conservative than Scalia” and a reliable friend of big corporations. Or that Trump’s entire presidency may be illegitimate given the unprecedented interference of Russian agents and FBI Director James Comey.

Senate Democrats should shut down the work of the Senate while the immoral and unconstitutional Muslim ban stands.

They have the votes to stop this pick. But to do it, they need to show some spine.

The rising tide of grassroots protest led by MoveOn members is already having an impact in pushing Democrats to fight harder, but to keep enough Democrats in line, we need to keep the pressure on.

That’s why MoveOn’s team has mounted an ongoing, long-term effort to stiffen the spines of lackluster Congressional Democrats. Will you support this effort?

Mitch McConnell wouldn’t even permit a hearing on President Obama’s pick, Merrick Garland, on the grounds that President Obama’s term would end in 10 months.

Here we have a president who lost by 3 million votes, who refuses to divest his massive conflicts of interest, and who may won the election only because of foreign intervention. And in his first week in office, he issued executive orders that defied the Constitution—and then his own agencies defied courts that sought to stop him.

If Democrats keep playing it tame while Republicans are playing hardball, then we could lose our entire democracy before we know what happened.

But the rising grassroots resistance is already having a huge impact. Tuesday’s #ResistTrumpTuesdays rallies included thousands targeting Senator Chuck Schumer—calling him out for not standing up to Trump’s nominees.

Now Democratic Leader Schumer has come out against Trump’s nominee and in support of Senator Jeff Merkley’s call to fillibuster Trump’s Supreme Court pick. That’s what we need to keep doing to make sure Democrats don’t preemptively surrender.

Democrats have two ways to stop this stolen pick. First, they can filibuster—and not allow the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster. And then, if Senate Republicans use the “nuclear” option and get rid of the filibuster rule, Democrats can vote against consent orders to proceed with the nomination.

To win on either account, we can’t afford to have any more Democrats preemptively surrender to Trump.

MoveOn members are lining up outside of senators’ offices in record numbers. Some of us are dominating lawmakers’ town hall meetings. Many of us are jamming congressional phone lines. (And if you’ve called recently, you know how busy those lines are!)

Now, MoveOn needs unprecedented resources, to keep organizing on all cylinders.

Will you chip in $5 a month? Your monthly donation will help MoveOn do two things: defeat this terrible Supreme Court pick, and stiffen the spines of Democrats for the many fights ahead.

Thanks for all you do.

Want to support our work? The MoveOn community will work every moment, day by day and year by year, to resist Trump’s agenda, contain the damage, defeat hate with love, and begin the process of swinging the nation’s pendulum back toward sanity, decency, and the kind of future that we must never give up on. And to do it we need your ongoing support, now more than ever. Will you stand with us?
