Subject: AAUW Nevada – ALERT . . . STOP VOUCHERS IN NEVADA
Today’s Reno Gazette Journal had the following news article today:
Imagine the state of Nevada writing a $5,000 check to parents for every child they homeschool or take to private school, instead of enrolling in public school.
In what would be an unorthodox use of taxpayer money, state lawmakers pushed forward a bill on Tuesday that would pay students to not attend public schools.
Nevada’s public school system is commonly ranked among the worst in the nation.
Senate Bill 302 provides students with 90 percent of the usual state education funding to instead be taken for private school. That includes religiously oriented private schools, and a recent amendment that would pay parents to homeschool their children.
SB 302 passed the Senate Finance Committee today and will go to the full senate very soon. Contact your senator and assembly person IMMEDIATELY and urge them to vote NO!! Also, make sure to “Share Your Opinion” on the Nevada Legislature website, https://www.leg.state.nv.us/App/Opinions/78th2015/A/”
- WE NEED TO RESPOND TO THIS REQUEST FOR ACTION BY THE RENO GAZETTE JOURNAL & THE AAUW
The budget for public schools, K-College, continues to be cut. This bill will be spending public tax money for children who can afford private school and take away money from the public schools which are already in dire need of funding.
This would only be another goodie for the rich who don’t need it while the rest of the school population would get a higher pupil/teacher ratio, poorer quality facilities and materials, and fewer course offerings.
The door to Higher Education is also closing for all but the rich as State public education funding cuts to State Higher Education Institutions have already resulted in enormous hikes in tuition for residents. The result: less access of the general public to higher education, less mobility, fewer better jobs, less chance for greater income or better housing, and the door to a better life is closing fast.
We need to draw a line in the sand on Education for future generations of all Nevada youth now! Tell your Representatives to vote AGAINST SB302.
